Good Flossing Technique

Searching for a good Children's Dentist in Baton Rouge, LA? Dr. Kasan Stevens is a knowledgeable, professional, patient, and kind dentist for children and adults. He is happy to educate children on hygienic dental practices, such as brushing and flossing techniques.

Why You Should Floss

Here are three compelling reasons why you and your children should floss.

  1. Flossing removes 40% of the plaque from your teeth. If you’re not flossing, you’re missing almost half of the bacteria that cause bad breath and swollen gums.
  2. Flossing decreases your risks of several diseases and health issues. It prevents gingivitis, respiratory disease, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, tooth decay, cavities, gum disease, and rheumatoid arthritis.
  3. Your teeth will look whiter and healthier. It is tough, if not impossible, to lighten up the shades of your teeth if you skip flossing. Skipping flossing also leaves unsightly buildup.

If you need any more reasons to floss or to be shown good flossing techniques in person, then reach out to your favorite Children's Dentist in Baton Rouge, LA, Dr. Kasan Stevens.

How to Floss

Break off a foot-and-a-half to two feet of dental floss.

Wrap the floss around your index and middle fingers on both hands, only leaving one to two inches of a gap in between your hands. The little gap of floss in between your hands is what you’ll be using. It is best to wrap one hand more than the other, so that way it is easier to utilize the entire length of floss.

Now, slip the floss in between two teeth and gently slide the floss up and down, and focus on rubbing the floss on the sides of each tooth.

When the floss reaches your gums, curve the dental floss into a c-shape and floss in the space between your teeth and gums. Be slow and careful. You don’t want to floss into your gums as this can be painful, and may scratch, cut, or bruise your gums.

Repeat the steps until you have flossed in between each tooth. With each new pair of teeth, unwind the dental floss from your hands and rewind it in such a way that you get a new, clean section of dental floss.
